And you want to wear the most solid shoes you have so that your toes are unbroken (or at least most of them are) when you leave. And it's going to be hot in the pit no matter what you wear - I chose protection over comfort both times I was on the rail. Then again, one time was in October and the other time was in February. Both times I just wore a button up shirt over a t-shirt, so I could tie the button up shirt around my waist once I got inside.
